Cost-effective Restoration /
Conservation Techniques for Disaster Response
Midwest freeze Dry, Ltd. specializes in salvage and
restoration of water damaged books and water damaged documents providing the following services: reproduction, deodorization, non-chemical and plasma fumigation.
Handling Water, Fire, Smoke, Soot or Mold Damaged Materials
Restoration and Conservation Handling
For restoration, water damaged books and water
damaged documents must be handled carefully to avoid inflicting any additional
damage.
 | Limit the possible exposure to harmful
molds and bacteria on water damaged vellum documents and water damaged leather
books. Disposable gloves and protective masks should be worn by all
personnel. |
 | Work as
quickly as safety considerations permit. (This is not the time to sort water
damaged documents and water damaged books!) |
Packing Water, Fire, Smoke, Soot, and Mold Damaged Books, Manuscripts, Documents and
Files X-Rays
 | Restoration of water damaged paper, water damaged documents and water damaged books.
These items should be packed in heavy duty
vinyl milk crates, if available. (Heavy duty cardboard boxes, approx.
18"x12"x10", lined with plastic garbage bags are an acceptable alternative for
water damaged books and water damaged documents.) |
 | Restoration packing for water damaged
leather books and water damaged documents alternating spine up and spine down.
This proven packing method minimizes cockling. |
 | Restoration of water damaged books, water damaged vellum documents and water damaged file folders.
These items should be
packed upright as if they were in a file drawer. |
 | Restoration of oversized water damaged
paper documents and water damaged leather books. These can be packed flat with other
items of similar size. |
 | Interleaf water damaged documents and
water damaged leather books only if colors are bleeding or migrating. This
usually happens with red or blue cloth bindings. Freezer paper, butcher
paper, or deli wrap sheets are all suitable for this use. To save time
interleaf every other volume. |
 | Pack all
water damaged books and water damaged documents tightly within the confines of
the box but never force a volume into place. |
Freezing Water, Fire, Smoke, Soot, or Mold Damaged Books, Manuscripts, Documents,
Files and X-Rays
 | Restoration of water damaged leather
books and water damaged paper documents. These should be frozen as quickly as
possible. Subzero temperatures inhibit mold growth delaying the deterioration of water damaged documents, water damaged books, and magazine stock (coated
paper), further minimizing the tendency for these materials to form into an
inseparable block. |
 | In an extreme winter emergency, water
damaged paper documents and water damaged leather books can be stored out of
doors as long as there is no exposure to temperatures above freezing or excessive
moisture, i.e. snow or sleet. |
Conservation Shipping of Water, Fire, Smoke, Soot, or Mold Damaged Books, Manuscripts,
Documents and Files X-Rays
 | Ship small quantities of water damaged books
and water damaged documents for restoration overnight to Midwest Freeze Dry
via UPS or FedEx. |
 | Transport larger water damaged quantities
of documents and water damaged books by a book conservation, moving or shipping
company. We are more than happy to help you organize and schedule such
shipping to our facility. |
