A Remedy For Toxic Odors (in
household items) Without The Headaches
We have seen an increase in
demand for treatment of books, carpets and items of furniture that exhibit
chemical odors. In most instances, such odors are caused by chemicals that can
evaporate readily at normal temperatures and pressures into the air. Chemicals
that do this are usually from the class of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's)
In the manufacturing and
environmental industries the process of observing odor causing chemicals
evaporating is called "off-gassing" or "out-gassing".
Common VOC's include organic
solvents that are used in the manufacture of many products including but not
limited to, paint, paint thinners, cleaning agents, disinfectants,
degreasers, disinfectants,
fuels, pesticides, glues, cosmetics, air fresheners, photocopying, pressed-wood
furniture, vinyl floors and varnishes.
Exposure to VOC’s can have cause
symptoms like fatigue, headaches, skin and eye irritation, tingling or numbness
in the extremities, drowsiness and dizziness. Some VOC’s such as benzene,
methanol and that old dry cleaning favorite perchloroethylene are known human
carcinogens.
Off-gassing odors from products
that contain VOC’s are stronger indoors because their odorous fumes are more
confined and their concentration is higher than in outdoor air. Consequently,
the presence of the VOC’s compromise the purity of indoor air and are a
significant contributor to indoor air pollution.
We can treat items that exhibit
odors attributed to VOC’s in our cold plasma chamber. This done under special
controlled conditions without the use of masking agents or other chemicals.
Instead, our process utilizes cold plasma energy, conditions of pressure and use
of inert, un-reactive gases to accelerate the release of bound VOC’s which are
then flushed safely away using pumps. We have found this to be a useful and safe
way to deal with the problems of odor from VOC’s.
