Rapid response from Midwest Freeze-Dry over a holiday weekend, not only rescued water damaged documents and water damaged records containing vital statistics, but saved the county money. A serious water main break in Chicago’s downtown area caused a flood in an active records and documents storage area in the Cook County Clerk’s office. The county clerk is responsible for birth, death, adoption and other essential documents and records. Although some of the water damaged records and water damaged documents could be replace by the State, the cost for reproduction was $1/ .70 Eur. page. Most of the bound water damaged books volumes contained 500 pages. The Office of the County Clark face a charge of $500/350 Eur. per book volume plus the cost of binding, bringing the potential replacement cost of the records, documents and leather books to $256,000. /180.000 / Eur.

In this instance, Midwest Freeze Dry, Ltd. was able to vacuum freeze-dry the water damaged documents and water damaged records, leather books for $10.00 / 7 Eur. per volume. This saved the Cook County Clerks office over $256,000 / 180.000 Eur.

Cost Effective Restoration

Midwest Freeze Dry Is currently working on a restoration project that is proving to be both challenging. This most recent restoration project is tapping into all of our knowledge of documents and books restoration and conservation.

We have just begun restoration work rescuing documents and leather books that date back 1837 the time before Abraham Lincoln was president. In fact we are working on the restoration of documents and books which were filed by Abraham Lincoln himself when he practiced law in the state of Illinois. It is essential that these important documents and books are carefully restored to a stable condition, as they are a significant part of our nation history. These vital documents and books ware not burned in a fire or damaged by water but were laden with a unique type of soot as a result of a fire that occurred very close to them.

Initially the idea was to carefully brush or vacuum the fine soot off the documents and books but when experimenting with a small sample of documents and books it was found that this method would not work. In fact, when it was brushed it actually got worse. We called Skip Palenik, an expert microscopist and microchemist to analyze this peculiar soot on the documents and books.

It was found that this not only contained hydrocarbons, but also a reactive metal salt as well. What this meant is that water from the air reacted with this salt and formed and acid. Over time, these documents and books would be eaten away if they were not properly treated.

At Midwest Freeze Dry we have developed a new cost effective method for restoration of these vital documents and books.

Our scientifically developed cost effective restoration method involves the use of inert dry gasses to keep water, which is found in air, away away from these documents and books until the aggressive soot can be carefully removed. This new restoration process will save the historical documents and books which were damaged indirectly by a fire.
